Machine Audit

KMK was invited to carry out the audit of an aging ship unloader. We inspected, surveyed, and validated the structural and mechanical function of the material reclaimer. Previously, it was used for unloading coal from bulk carriers at a historically important dock.

Objectives:

  • Inspection – Determine the state of the unloader
  • Audit – Check the capability of the machine to handle different materials, e.g. gypsum
  • Test – Start up the unloader to check the functionality of the mechanisms

With large port equipment (such as a crane, a ship loader, or this ship unloader) we require a detailed level of inspection. And so, after initial site survey and inspection indicated major areas of concern, KMK completed the structural and mechanical surveying in a detailed manner. For instance, inspection of the sub-structure from underneath using a scissor lift.

Checks included:

  • General Condition – Paint coverage, rusted areas, safety standard
  • Welds and platesNon-destructive testing (NDT) in areas of concern/high loading
  • Mechanical items – Critical mechanical parts e.g. slew bearings, wearing items, support wheels

A comprehensive report was produced to conclude a final recommendation for the future use of the machine and equipment, which considered the financial impact, and viability.

KMK provide many services for sites around the world, and you can see our list of services here.

Benefits of KMK site surveying & machine audit:

  • Surveys by Charted Engineers
  • Structural integrity inspection
  • Mechanical equipment survey
  • 3D Scanning options
  • Non-Destructive Testing (NDT)
  • Use of drones for inspection of hard-to-reach locations
  • Unbiased recommendations, advice and decision making
  • Machine control software review, simulation and re-programming
