Train Dynamic Analysis

Investigation into excessive wagon noise

For this case study KMK used KSIM, in-house developed, Train Dynamic Simulation software, to calculate the dynamics of a noisy train.

This site was installed without predicting the wagon forces, resulting in issues for both client and the residents nearby.

Problems identified:

  • Noise pollution – Train couplers collide when rebounding
  • Damage to wagons – Excessive rebound forces leading to wagon/car damage

The force and other dynamics of EACH COUPLER are shown here.  You can see the velocity of the wagons.  The deep blue colour next to the bright red colour shows the ‘whip’ effect.

Solutions proposed

  • Damping – Adding a brake car to reduce the rebound

Fantastic, but how much brake force should we add without adverse effects?

KSIM can quickly test many options without the need for trial and error, recommending the level of braking for this particular train.

From this image you can visually see the reduction in ‘whip’ effect achieved.  The train slows down as one unit, and without any rebound.  This eliminates wagon noise from the energetic rebound shown above.

Benefits of KMK Train Dynamic Analysis & Simulation

  • Size your equipment e.g. Drive units
  • Create or improve Plant Timecycle
  • Predict the forces for your Train Mover Systems
  • Predict the forces for your Train Holding Devices
  • Predict the noise and ripple effect in your train
  • Prevent expensive wagon damage and fatigue
  • Prevent down-time from broken or damaged wagons
  • Protect equipment from damage by handling broken wagons
